wreckoning

Because 6 million americans are inexplicably unprepared for the DTV transition (yes, the one I blogged about two years ago) it has been officially postponed until June which means the relentless PSA campaign will continue for the next 5 months. Just this fact alone should make my decision an easy one.

I'm still, "on the fence" about what exactly I will do concerning television. Previously I pledged to give it up when the switch comes (although I also prepared myself with the appropriate technology). I've wavered back and forth and back again. When I came home from holidays I pledged to not turn the tv on that evening but honestly it was the first thing I did after ensuring that none of my shit was stolen while I was gone...oh, and cracking open a cold one.

I love mundane, ridiculous, cheap entertainment. My monkeymind insists upon having it. However, the rest of me knows that I need to stop junking out in this life. Making good and healthy decisions needs to become a priority for me. This seems to be a pivotal moment. Gravity pulls harder now.

I've created lists of, "other things I should be doing," and have even gone to the effort of doing other things (like joining the gym). I'm happy with the other thing! I feel empowered when I choose to do something else.

Conversely, I feel quite weak when I run with the monkeymind. My damned, silly monkeymind is just too much fun to run with.

What we've got here is a crisis! The easy thing would be to defer my decision until June and in the meantime, wean myself off the box. That does sound easy, after all, I was able to quit cigarettes cold turkey a decade ago....but I just don't know. I just don't know how this story ends yet.

hmmmmmmm

i broke down

...and bought myself a new, programmable coffee maker with my birthday loot. Morning life has been sheer bliss as I awaken to aromatic glory! I should have done this years ago.

we did it!

We f-ing did it! The Federal Highway Administration (I bet their board meetings are a blast) reports that, "Americans cut their driving by more than 112 billion miles over the past 13 months." Hey-Yoooooooo!!!!

Way to go Americans! This is amazing news!!!! Let's double it this year!

still dreaming

I do like to keep this board light and airy but I must express concern toward the general sentiments I heard and saw yesterday about the "new state of race relations" in our country. For example, one white man's banner read, "We Finally Overcame" and I heard an African American man on the news proclaim with jubilation, "Color doesn't matter anymore!" I heard a white woman explaining to her child that, "Dr. King's dream has come true."

The election of President Obama does not erase or end the climates of institutional racism and white privilege that still persist here. Nor does it absolve us from the legacy and horror of the 360+ year slave trade from which this country's history is deeply rooted. Yesterday was a feel good event for this nation but the quest for creating a place where everybody is treated equally will continue to be a central challenge for us to work toward together. Fear, hatred and bigotry haven't vanished now that a man of color is the president.

I'm certain the president wants us to know this milestone is not a finish line but merely a place to stop and reflect upon how far we have come. The U.S. is still a place where dreaming for equality is a relevant pursuit!

regime shift

This is certainly the end of an era. The sun set on one presidency tonight and will rise upon another tomorrow morning. Hearing about lots of hope and positive energy today. People are really excited about this transfer of power. I'm glad about that. I wish I felt positive and hopeful about the direction of our nation. I really want to feel that way.

I wonder how relieved G-dub must feel tonight?

Keeping it Weird.....and creepy!

Macelino de Jesus Martinez, 36, was arrested Monday on suspicion of trying to arrange to have his 14 year old daughter marry Margarito de Jesus Galindo, 18, for $16,000, 100 cases of Corona, 50 cases of Modelo beer, several cases of meat, two cases of wine, 50 cases of Gatorade and 50 cases of soft drinks, authorities said. The girl moved in with Galindo and when payments were not received, her father called police to get his daughter back.

...very, very creepy! Obviously both men were arrested and are awaiting prosecution.

An interesting thing about this is that in southern mexico, where each man is from, arranged marriage with a dowry is still culturally accepted practice. I'm not sure, however, if massive quantities of bad beer are often part of the bartering.

sure to land

I was kicked off vacation island bra, the tribe had nothing to do with it this time. I must say though that I haven't quite landed yet. My spirit is still adrift in time transit. Sure hope to make it back sometime this week. If the mind and body are separated for too long I fear what may happen!

Half of me made it down to the hot sand at Cowell's yesterday to enjoy a frosty adult beverage while enjoying the radio broadcast of the divisional series.....viva la island time!!!
