Doing Her Part
Can't say that I've done a 'keeping it weird' post in a while. It's not like weirdness has left this coastal city. It's here! In fact if you come here you would probably find more strangeness than I even recognize. I suppose I've just been negligent in documenting those who are doing their part. This, Stuart Smalley-like affirmation is from today's Sentinel:
Santa Cruz has a nice clock
A number of years ago, a friend and I would go to San Francisco and have lunch at the St. Francis Hotel. After lunch I would tell my friend "I will see you at the clock," a very beautiful clock near the entrance of the hotel. I say the same here in Santa Cruz, "I will see you at the clock," a very nice-looking clock in Santa Cruz.

galactic conclusion
Talk this week about George Lucas bringing the saga to TV. He asserted that, "the Skywalkers aren't in it, and it's about minor characters."
Whatever....What I wish would happen is that if he isn't willing to do it himself, Lucas would commission artists to finish Episodes 7,8,and 9 via the animated style established in the Clone War series. It could all be done CGI style I guess but the clone war series rocks the house and kicks some ass!

Silent Fall?
A line in the sand is being drawn.
The target: 4300+ Light Brown Apple Moths in 11 CA counties
At risk, agriculture officials claim, is $133 million in California crops. The proposed solution is to spray infested areas with a synthetic pheromone, CheckMate OLR-F. There is controversy pertaining to the health risks associated with the biochemical.
CheckMate OLR-F is odorless to humans, the scent confuses the male moths. They follow it and lose track of the real female moths, thereby disrupting the mating cycle.
My county is considered ground zero for LBAM infestation as 87% of the species is found here. Surprisingly, there has been very little protest to date against the impending plan to eradicate the moth. The plan is being challenged in court but the public seems to be silent so far.
So far.
This is a real test to determine and define the power of the people in Santa Cruz county and beyond. I wonder if the people of the Central Coast will organize to stop the spraying. So far there has been one cycle of spraying in Monterey county.
This is an emerging story to follow...

human-powered circumnavigation controversy
The attempt to power oneself around the planet is and or has been attempted by no less than 4 people. The first two humans to achieve such a feat are trying to qualify their journies with Guiness but it is unclear whether either attempt will be recognized. Check out the controversey:

Wow...how cool is this? The latest attempt took no less than 13 years and the quickest controversial attempt, 720 days. This is amazing to me....people even trying!
If I were to start all over again out of Randolph this would have been a good challenge for me. I still could try to do it but I think I would have to start really soon.
They are racing to see who can do it the fastest....I wonder if there is anyone out there trying to do it the slowest?
