Disc Golf on the Ice Planet Hoth
Today Dubro and I traversed the frozen tundra of Pye Brook disc golf course in Topsfield, MA. From what I gather this course was just built last year and much of it was constructed with the helping energy provided by Ryan Johnson's Eagle Scout Project (Troop 81).
"Pye Brook Park is on the site of an old quarry and later, Topsfield’s town landfill. Half of the park is surrounded by Pye Brook, a stream/swamp/wetlands area that eventually feeds into the Ipswich River...The landfill was capped in 2002, and the park opened in 2003.
The course winds around the periphery of the park, making use of the elevation changes, water hazards, and what little woods were available. Since the primary function of the park is the athletic fields for town sports teams, and the wetlands placed so many restrictions on where we could locate holes, there weren’t many options on how to design the holes. The result is that the direction of the 18 holes point away from the other park users and their parking areas, and tries to incorporate as many of the hazards as available."
Great job! Check out hole 15 for example....the "signature hole."
This is what the approach looks like on a pleasant winter day.
"From the top of the hill, there’s a great view of most of the park. The basket is about 40’ downhill on beautiful green that’s on the far side of a large pond. The basket is 312 feet away, and about 20’ from the edge of the pond."
...and during warmer months (the arrow points at the basket)
Dubro's drive landed him straight onto the ice. He didn't want to take the shot in fear of falling in the lake so I took it for him. I nearly birdied....and I didn't fall in!

Ultimate X-Mas Gift
Buzzed to the mall after work for the obvious and this one was a no-brainer!
Behold the Sauna Suit!
"One size fits all; soft and pliable waterproof vinyl fabric; all seams are 100% electronically sealed."
Dig the warning:
"Do not wear it over 10 minutes as you take violent exercise."
You’re probably wondering to yourself, “who will be the one to get this gem?” We shall see. It will be included in the family’s yankee swap come Sunday.

Not Going Postal
dare to struggle, dare to win
Well it had been brewing for quite a while and so it came as no shock to any of us, the news that our school will be closed come Junetime. Our preschool program will be discontinued and the building will be sold….and that’s that.
As this realization has been culminating for months and weeks I have meandered through Kubler-Ross’s stages grief and now I find myself relieved, joyful and even excited. I suppose if I had dependents I would be quite scared or if I was of the postal variety I would be mad as hell but this is really a blessing for me and I’m kind of surprised I’m feeling this way…..but I do.
I liken it to a beautiful wave I’ve been riding. It’s fat with righteous curl. It has seemed unending. But every wave, great or funky, must finally bottom-out only to crash upon the shores, be it rocky or with sand. I’m finding my way on to a sandy shore and I am absolutely ready to paddle out once again and find one even fatter and dare I say more righteous.
One great occurrence I’ve noticed today is that everyone is being really nice to each other, to us. I like that. I’m savoring the kindness.
My empathy and solidarity is shared with the 30,000 GM workers also discovering their pink slips on this day. Like Bernstein sings, “Don’t let your heart get broken by this world.”
